The Classic Collection—Designed for Moore&Moore
The Classic Collection was commissioned by Moore & Moore Wallpaper to bring a contemporary Australian sensibility to the interior.
The four designs draw from different decorative histories and visual references. Flannel Flower Damask places the Australian native flannel flower within the structure of traditional damask, referencing its popularity in Australian interiors of the 1940s and 1950s. Ticking Stripes reworks the utilitarian striped fabric once used for mattresses and other hard-wearing domestic objects. Coral looks to the geometry and ornament of Art Deco, while Gum Leaves takes the elongated form of the eucalyptus leaf and builds it into a cascading repeat.
Rather than imposing a single visual language across the collection, each design begins with its own source and finds a different way into pattern.
Each of the four designs was developed in four colourways, allowing me to work with pattern at architectural scale—considering not only the individual motif, but rhythm, repetition and the way a surface changes when it extends across an interior.
The project sits at the intersection of design and my broader artistic practice: taking something observed, remembered or inherited and reorganising it through pattern.
