Stitched Together—Artwork Collaboration

Stitched Together began with a conversation about synaesthesia: what might an image sound like, and what might a sound look like?

For the fifth edition of Seven With Another, creatives from different disciplines were invited to collaborate. I was paired with composer Robert Davidson to create a new work for Brisbane Powerhouse.

With the exhibition site known in advance, I began with a pattern referencing Bauhaus textiles of the 1920s—the decade in which the Powerhouse was built. Robert responded to the pattern in sound. I responded to his composition with another pattern, and the exchange continued through five visual and five musical responses—a structure we chose to reflect the fifth edition of the project.

For the exhibition, I brought the patterns together across a single sculptural form, while Robert layered the corresponding compositions into a soundscape that did not exactly repeat for several hours.

Each response became the starting point for the next. Something made in one language was received, interpreted and returned in another.

Stitched Together became a conversation between image and sound, but also between two creative practices—each altering what the other might have made alone.
