Lucerne
Limited edition letterpress print
Sometimes the most ordinary plants tell much larger stories.
When I began researching Walter Hill, Brisbane’s first colonial botanist, I became fascinated by the practical role plants played in the development of the young colony.
Animals worked the land. They carried people and freight. Their health was essential, and finding nutritious plants that could sustain them in Queensland’s conditions was an important part of Hill’s work.
Lucerne was one of those plants.
Hill experimented with mixing grasses with other plants to create nutritious feed for livestock, with lucerne playing an important role in those mixtures.
Looking closely at the plant, I was drawn to something else entirely: its intricate branching stems, tiny leaves and clustered flowers. Its detailed structure seemed made for pattern.
I began drawing, extracting and repeating its forms until individual stems gathered into a circular composition. What had once been valued for its usefulness began to take on another life.
I printed Lucerne on an original Heidelberg Windmill letterpress, connecting the contemporary pattern to the physical impression of a traditional printing process.
I love that transformation.
A humble plant once used to sustain working animals becomes something to look at simply for the pleasure of looking.
