CP3
Limited edition machine embroidery
There is a point in repetition where a leaf stops behaving like a leaf.
That moment has interested me for a long time.
While researching Walter Hill and the early Brisbane Botanic Gardens, I discovered that women regularly visited the Gardens in the late nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from the plants around them for their floral embroideries.
It created a beautiful connection between place, observation and making.
For these works, I chose the Caladium. Its enormous heart-shaped leaves offered a form that was immediately recognisable but simple enough to repeat, rotate and reorganise.
CP3 is one of three intimate embroideries that emerged from that process.
Here, the Caladium leaves connect across the linen to create a larger geometric structure. Look closely and the individual leaves remain visible. Allow your eye to move across the whole work and they begin to disappear into pattern.
Machine embroidered in black mercerised yarn onto pure white linen, the work moves between botanical drawing, textile and abstraction.
A plant becomes a leaf.
A leaf becomes a line.
And through repetition, the line becomes something we have not quite seen before.
