CP2
Limited edition machine embroidery
A stitch can carry a story across generations.
While researching Walter Hill and the early Brisbane Botanic Gardens, I discovered that women regularly visited the Gardens in the late nineteenth century, finding inspiration among the plants for their own floral embroideries.
I was fascinated by the thought of them looking.
A leaf encountered during a walk might be remembered, drawn or carried home as an idea. Observation could become pattern; pattern could become stitch.
The giant heart-shaped leaf of the Caladium became my own starting point.
CP2 is one of three intimate embroideries in which I took that single botanical form and explored what repetition might allow it to become. Here, the leaves turn towards one another, joining into small circular forms that repeat across the linen.
The botanical source is still visible, but something else begins to appear between the leaves.
Machine embroidered in black mercerised yarn onto pure white linen, the work connects contemporary digital pattern-making with a form of making practised by women more than a century ago.
The tools have changed.
The impulse to look closely, rearrange what we see and make something from it has not.
