CP1
Limited edition machine embroidery
Sometimes the way a plant was seen in the past becomes part of how I choose to make with it in the present.
While researching Walter Hill and the early Brisbane Botanic Gardens, I discovered that women regularly visited the Gardens in the late nineteenth century, finding inspiration among the plants for their own floral embroideries.
That small detail stayed with me.
Among the plants cultivated in the Gardens was Caladium, with its enormous heart-shaped leaves. I had already been drawn to the form of the leaf, but the history of women looking at plants and translating what they saw into stitch opened another way of working with it.
CP1 is one of three intimate embroideries that grew from that connection.
I reduced the Caladium leaf to line, repeated it and arranged the forms into a precise pattern. Machine embroidered in black mercerised yarn onto pure white linen, the work brings together a contemporary method of drawing with the much older language of needle and thread.
There is something I love about that continuity.
More than a century ago, women walked through the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, looked closely at plants and carried those observations home to embroider.
I looked at the same history.
And found myself stitching too.
