Cinchona
Limited edition letterpress print
Some plants carry stories of survival.
Cinchona caught my attention while I was researching Walter Hill, Brisbane’s first colonial botanist, and the plants he hoped might help the young colony grow and survive.
Its story was extraordinary.
The bark of the Cinchona plant contains quinine, long used in the treatment of malaria. During Brisbane’s early settlement, malaria was a serious threat, and Hill was passionate about cultivating Cinchona in Queensland. Here was a plant valued not for how it looked, but for what it might do: protect human life.
That history changed the way I looked at it.
Working from botanical imagery, I began isolating the plant’s leaves and small clustered flowers, drawing and reorganising them through repetition. Gradually, the botanical specimen became pattern—its medicinal history still present, but no longer immediately visible.
I printed Cinchona on an original Heidelberg Windmill letterpress, bringing another layer of history into the making of the work through the physical impression of ink into paper.
I am drawn to that movement between what we see and what lies beneath it.
At first, a pattern.
Behind it, a plant.
And behind the plant, a story about our enduring desire to find something in nature that might save us.
