Limited edition letterpress print
Some plants become so much a part of a place that it is difficult to imagine the landscape without them.
Casuarina is one of those plants for me.
Growing along the Queensland coast, its fine, feathery foliage and distinctive silhouette are part of the visual language of the beach. But the tree is doing more than simply framing the view. Its tenacious roots help hold fragile foreshore dunes in place.
While researching Walter Hill, Brisbane’s first colonial botanist, I discovered another connection.
Hill cultivated Casuarinas in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and propagated them throughout the region. A plant I knew as part of the familiar Queensland landscape became connected to a much larger story about how plants were collected, cultivated and distributed.
I began looking more closely.
The delicate segmented foliage became my starting point. Removed from the tree and reorganised through repetition, it shifted from something recognisably botanical into line, rhythm and pattern.
I printed Casuarina on an original Heidelberg Windmill letterpress, pressing the image into cotton rag paper and giving those fine botanical lines a physical presence.
I love that this quiet, familiar tree performs such an important task.
Holding the land together while asking for almost no attention at all.
The Edition
Released in an edition of twenty, Casuarina is letterpress printed on Magnani Incisioni 650/5 Smooth White 100% cotton rag paper using rubber-based inks.
Each print is signed, titled and individually numbered on the reverse, wrapped in acid-free tissue and presented in a custom protective envelope. It is accompanied by information detailing the artwork, the Collected Patterns series and its place within the edition.
The print is sold unframed and ships worldwide in a rigid protective envelope.
