Caladium
Limited edition letterpress print
Sometimes a plant seems to invite imagination before you know anything about its history.
Caladium is one of those plants.
Its large, distinctive leaves have inspired names including Elephant Ear, Heart of Jesus and Angel Wings—each an attempt to describe the same botanical form through something already familiar to us.
I loved that.
While researching Walter Hill, Brisbane’s first colonial botanist, I discovered that his conservatory in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens was often filled with seedlings he was raising to plant in the Gardens and distribute throughout Queensland.
Caladium, indigenous to areas of South and Central America, belonged to this world of propagation and exchange: plants arriving from elsewhere, being nurtured, multiplied and finding their way into a new landscape.
For me, though, everything returned to the leaf.
I began drawing its generous heart-like form, then repeating and reorganising it. Removed from the plant, the leaves began to relate to one another differently—part botanical study, part pattern, part imagined arrangement.
I printed Caladium on an original Heidelberg Windmill letterpress, pressing those digitally drawn forms into cotton rag paper.
Perhaps what I love most is that people have looked at this same leaf and seen an elephant’s ear, a sacred heart and an angel’s wing.
The plant stays the same.
The story changes according to who is looking.
