Some plants insist on more than one image.

When I began researching Walter Hill, Brisbane’s first colonial botanist, I became fascinated by the Bunya Bunya—Araucaria bidwillii—a remarkable tree native to Queensland.

The more I learned, the more compelling its story became.

The Bunya Bunya is a sacred tree for Aboriginal peoples, with groves traditionally held under particular tribal or family custodianship. It was also one of Walter Hill’s favourite trees. As curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, he planted an avenue of Bunya Bunyas that became a popular promenade in the late nineteenth century.

I could imagine people walking beneath those extraordinary trees.

But when I began making the work, the full form of the tree resisted me. It was too complex for the kind of pattern I wanted to create.

So I looked closer.

I found my answer in a single element: the female cone.

Bunya 6 completes the series of six small works that emerged from that one decision. By this point, the cone has become a kind of visual character—something I could turn, repeat, cluster and send moving across the page.

There was something joyful about making these works. The forms reminded me of balloons or Christmas ornaments, an unexpected playfulness emerging from a plant with such a long and significant history.

Six prints came from one small part of one extraordinary tree.

Sometimes a limitation opens up more possibilities than it closes.
