It's had a number of medicinal uses throughout history, including the use of Croton oil as a violent purgative. It's no longer used this way, however, the bark of some species is still used to flavour Campari and Vermouth. Crotons adorn gardens all over Brisbane thanks to Walter Hill propagating and distributing them during his early curatorship of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. During early settlement in Australia, animals worked the land, provided transport and freight, and it was critical they were fed well. Brisbane Botanist, Walter Hill, mixed different grass seeds together or grass seeds with different plants, to create nutritious feed for livestock. Lucerne was crucial in this mix. The detailed form of this plant made a perfect subject for this pattern. In the form of the artwork, I used a very simple mirroring repeat, but with a slight variation, reflecting one side upside down to create interest and movement. Bromeliads are generally hardy plants, ideal for the harsh climate of the subtropics. Like the Caladium, its decorative qualities were greatly admired by Walter Hill, who propagated them in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. He distributed thousands of cuttings to home gardeners around Brisbane in the late 1800s, which is one of the reasons they're so prevalent today. A wonderful legacy of a visionary botanist.
