Cabbage Palm

The Cabbage Palm is found in moist open forest, often in swampy sites and on margins of rainforests or near the sea. Botanist, Walter Hill, spent considerable time cultivating native and foreign Palms and Cycads in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, growing a small plantation of them adjacent to the Garden's Aviary. Some of them are still there today, making them over 150 years old, a fact worth celebrating in this series. Erythroxylon Coca

Erythroxylon Coca is native to South America and is best known for its alkaloids, a powerful stimulant called cocaine. Walter Hill cultivated it in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens for its medicinal properties and as a substitute for tea, coffee, tobacco and opium. Including it in this series illustrates the importance of Botanical Gardens as hot-houses for experimentation, which was one of their main functions. Coffea Arabica

It was one of a number of crops of economic value trialled in the colonies and our early botanists had the hard job of cultivating export quantities. Caladium

Bromeliad

Bromeliads are generally hardy plants, ideal for the harsh climate of the subtropics. Like the Caladium, its decorative qualities were greatly admired by Walter Hill, who propagated them in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. He distributed thousands of cuttings to home gardeners around Brisbane in the late 1800s, which is one of the reasons they're so prevalent today. A wonderful legacy of a visionary botanist.
