For JEANBAG™ to take the punishing hours of relaxing and unwinding, book reading, DVD watching and iPad surfing that we do when lounging, it needs to be super strong and built to last. That’s why I use a strong commercial grade thread, suitable for denim and upholstery. This thread is tough stuff!
Sewing yarn or thread can be made from natural fibres like cotton, silk, linen and wool, while synthetic threads commonly include polyester (one of the most widely used), nylon, rayon, elastane (for stretch) and there are even threads made from metal. Core spun polyester thread is one of the strongest used in the fashion and furnishing industries. It is made by wrapping staple polyester around a continuous polyester filament during spinning and plying these yarns into a sewing thread.
The other factor in choosing the right thread for your project is its weight, which indicates its thickness. The most common weight system specifies the length of the thread in kilometers required to weigh 1 kilogram. So, a greater weight number indicates a thinner thread. Using a fine cotton thread for sewing cotton voile in JEANBAG™ would buckle under the pressure, but core spun polyester will see JEANBAG™ enjoy a long and happy life!
