As part of the research for my upcoming exhibition, Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill, I obviously had a good look at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. No kidding, you say!
It’s true, there has been room for confusion as to which is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, but for me, this cleared it up…
“In 1994 the colloquial name Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens was changed to ‘Brisbane Botanic Gardens‘ (and for further local qualification) at suburban Mt Coot-tha. The City Botanic Gardens ceased to be Brisbane’s main Botanic Gardens in 1983 and they are now known internationally as the ‘City Gardens’, Queensland’s number one Heritage Park. In 1983 all the functions of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens were carried on at the new site which is now known as the ‘Brisbane Botanic Gardens’.”

Of course, as Walter Hill was the curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens from 1855-1881, all my research was conducted around the ‘City Gardens’…
