I’m very excited to announce that my 2011 solo exhibition, Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill will be touring to the Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba later this year.
As this show will feature all the works from the exhibition first held at Myrtle Street Studio, plus a colour series of giclée prints and a collection of digital wallpaper, I had to look at updating the original exhibition title to include the additional works. This was an interesting process as essentially the exhibition’s focus is still the same: reflecting on Walter Hill’s contribution to the development of the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens and Queensland agriculture through the plants he cultivated. However, as I have progressed with new iterations of the work, and developed commercial product (wallpaper), the work in the exhibition has grown and this should be noted.
So, I went through the process of creating a list, brainstorming possible titles for the forthcoming exhibition:
Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill (Revisited) – suggesting looking again at the original work and reflecting upon it again
Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill (Expanded) – suggesting the original work, plus additional works
Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill (Extended) – as above
Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill (Series Extended) – again, as above
Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill (Continued) – suggesting a continuing exploration of the original work
Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill (cont…) – as above
A brief discussion with branding strategist and internationally-awarded graphic designer, Kevin Finn, lead to the title Recollected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill. For me, ‘recollected patterns’ encompasses all the above titles, implying a ‘bringing together’ of the original collection, revisiting it afresh and expanding upon it.
In my speech at the vernisage last year, I said that the exhibition felt like the beginning of a whole new body of work, rather than the culmination of 12-months research and development. I still feel this way more that 12-months after the first exhibition, hence, Recollected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill, will create a new timeline within this body of work.
