My upcoming solo exhibition, Recollected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill at the Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba is drawing near and I’m methodically working through my to do list.
This show features all the works from the original exhibition, Collected Patterns: The botany of Walter Hill, first held at Myrtle Street Studio, plus a new colour series of giclée prints and a selection of digital wallpaper.
After I finalised my contract with the gallery and provided all media information and images, I sat down to review the gallery floor plan. I always design my exhibitions for the space in which they will be hung and while the original Collected Patterns show was quite compact, Recollected Patterns will contain more works and it’s important the hang is not overcrowded and maintains a logical flow.
I have developed a handy tool to calculate the running metres of both available wall space and artwork. To determine my total artwork running metres, in an Excel spreadsheet I add the width of my artworks and the space I wish to leave in between them, which allows me to confirm the total number of works going into the exhibition and their best placement with regards the available wall space. It means the difference between including an extra colour giclée print or not and helps to streamline the process of installing the exhibition, once we get to that stage.
Now that the exhibition hang and number of works in the show has been finalised, I am confirming the colourways of the new giclée prints, which works require printing and framing and what other materials I need to organise for installation!
