The Falling Leaves Collection

OVERVIEW
The Falling Leaves collection of Australian-made, commercial quality, sustainable textiles and wallpaper is the result of research into manufacturing in Australia and part of a larger project called Making Place.

Concerned by the lack of stewardship in product design, it was important for this collection to focus on the use of renewable materials, clean processes and limited wastage, and provide an option for interior decorating with a lighter footprint.

Made from renewable and biodegradable EcoWool and bamboo, the textiles are naturally fire retardant and anti-bacterial. They can be hung, stretched on a screen or used in upholstery. The wallpaper is printed on sustainably sourced paper with water-based inks and finished with a matt varnish. Both are suitable for commercial and residential use and available in a selection of neutral colours.

The surface design draws reference from traditional damask motifs, used for hundreds of years in European textiles and wallpapers. However, instead of building a up a complex design with varied elements, Falling Leaves forms a lattice pattern from a single motif, which appears to break into pieces, cascading and ‘falling’ through the repeat.

The collection was photographed in an abandoned and decaying Queenslander, once a stately Australian home, to partially transform the space through a process called ‘making place’. By using wallpaper and textiles to re-inhabit one of the rooms of the house the photographic artwork examines how we make a sense of place for ourselves in our homes using soft furnishings and familiar objects.

The renowned Australian furniture and interiors showroom, Space Furniture, included Falling Leaves wallpaper in their Brisbane feature window for the launch of the internationally celebrated Moooi furniture and lighting collection. In the clove/sterling colourway, Falling Leaves created the perfect backdrop for the Dutch Masters inspired still-life display.
